Which of the following accurately describes an example of how materials can move across the cell membrane through active transpo

rt? A protein acts as a channel to allow large, hydrophilic molecules to diffuse across the cell membrane. A protein acts as a pump and moves calcium ions from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. The cell membrane folds to surround a substance and bring the substance inside the cell during exocytosis. Water moves by osmosis from higher concentration to lower concentration by passing through proteins called aquaporins.

Answer:

A protein acts as a pump and moves calcium ions from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.

Explanation:

An active transport means a transport which utilizes ATP i.e. energy input to move substances against their concentration gradient.

Naturally, substances like ions have a tendency to move from higher concentration to lower concentration. This is know as passive transport which does not require any energy input. But, if we want to move an ion against its concentration gradient then we will have to provide energy input and such transport is known as active transport. Pumps are transport proteins which are involved in active transport in a cell. They may be located on cell membrane or plasma membrane of organelles like sarcoplasmic reticulum (ER) etc.

Examples of pumps are Na⁺ - K⁺ pumps in cell membrane, calcium pumps in sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR).

Compare and contrast genetic engineering to the process of natural selection select all statements that are are
alisha [4.7K]

Genetic engineering is due to the human selection of desired phenotypes, whereas natural selection is a slow process of differential survival and reproduction.

What does natural selection mean?

According to the evolution theory, natural selection is a slow process of differential survival of the fittest organisms in a given environment.

Conversely, genetic engineering refers to the molecular biology techniques used in the laboratory to produce organisms expressing desired phenotypes.

In conclusion, genetic engineering is based on human molecular biology techniques, whereas natural selection refers to differential survival and reproduction in nature.

Look at metaphase and anaphase. Suggest the purpose of the spindle fibers during mitosis.
guajiro [1.7K]

Answer:

The spindle fibre is necessary to separate the sister chromatids into opposite sides of the cell.

Please find detailed explanation below

Explanation:

Mitosis is the cell division that produces two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell. Mitosis occurs in stages viz: prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. The replicated chromosome, aligns at the centre of the cell in the METAPHASE stage and separates into opposite poles in the ANAPHASE stage.

This alignment (at the equator) and separation into opposite pole is possible with the aid of a structure called SPINDLE FIBRES. Spindle is a structure formed from microtubules, which attach to the kinetochores (located in the centromere) of each replicated chromosome to separate them from one another. Hence, the purpose of the spindle fibre during mitotic division is to separate the GENETIC MATERIAL of a parent cell into two daughter cells.
