These are developed from the cytoskeletal proteins. They have a diameter that is intermediate between thick and thin myofibrils. The diameter of the myofibril is in between 10 to 12 nm. They stabilize the nucleus. The main function of the intermediate filaments is to provide mechanical strength to the cells that will help them to withstand stress during stretching, elongation and changing shape.
