Central greece, near Aegean Sea. Had poor soil, so relied on trade. Came into contact with many new ideas and peoples through trade. Had a democracy. Thought all men should be educated- taught different things like music. valued art and beauty. Men served two years in the army. Women couldn't choose who to marry or own property.
