How do you choose between mean and median as the best measure for the center of a distribution

Mathematics

The mean is often the default measure of center because it includes every data point, ie its more representative. However, if you have outliers then the mean will be skewed toward the outlier. For example, with home prices, very expensive houses will make the mean larger than it should be if you focused on the main cluster of data. This is why the median home price is often measured and reported (rather than the mean home price).

Fill in the P(X=x) values to give a legitimate probability distribution for the discrete random variable , whose possible values
Naddika [18.5K]

For a probability distribution to be represented, it is needed that P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) = 0.44. Hence one possible example is:

  • P(X = 0) = 0.40.
  • P(X = 1) = 0.04.

<h3>What is needed for a discrete random variable to represent a probability distribution?</h3>

The sum of all the probabilities must be of 1, hence:

P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) + P(X = 3) + P(X = 4) + P(X = 5) = 1.

Then, considering the table:

P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) + 0.15 + 0.17 + 0.24 = 1

P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) + 0.56 = 1

P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) = 0.44.

Hence one possible example is:

  • P(X = 0) = 0.40.
  • P(X = 1) = 0.04.

Permutations and combination question ^^
mario62 [17]

Answer:  22) A

<u>Step-by-step explanation:</u>

First, order doesn't matter so it is a Combination.

<em>In other words, it doesn't matter which person was chosen 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th to bring food because they are all bringing "food".</em>

Next, If you are going to choose  person to 4 people to bring food out of a total of 4 + 3 + 1 = 8 people, you get → ₈C₄

And you are going to choose 3 people to bring decorations out the remaining 8 - 4 = 4 people, you get → ₄C₃

And you are going to choose 1 person to be the host out of the remaining 4 - 3 = 1 person, you get → ₁C₁

"And" means multiplication so altogether you get ⇒  ₈C₄ × ₄C₃ × ₁C₁

ElenaW [278]
<h3><u>Question:</u></h3>

Serena uses chalk to draw a straight line on the sidewalk. The line is 1/2 ft long. She wants to divide the line into sections that are each 1/8 ft long. How many sections will the line be divided into?

<h3><u>Answer:</u></h3>

The number of sections that the line is divided is 4

<h3><u>Solution:</u></h3>

Given that, Serena uses chalk to draw a straight line on the sidewalk

The line is 1/2 ft long. She wants to divide the line into sections that are each 1/8 ft long

From given,

Total\ length\ of\ line = \frac{1}{2} \text{ feet }\\\\Length\ of\ each\ section = \frac{1}{8} \text{ feet }

To find: Number of sections can be made

The number of sections that can be made is found by dividing the total length of line by length of each section

\text{Number of sections } = \frac{\text{Total length of line}}{\text{length of each section}}

Substituting the values, we get,

\text{Number of sections } = \frac{\frac{1}{2}}{\frac{1}{8}}\\\\\text{Number of sections } = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{8}{1}\\\\\text{Number of sections } = 4

Thus number of sections that the line is divided is 4
