1. Laser scanning is a technology used to analyze an object or site in order to get information about its shape, details, color, elements, and other relevant data. Since this technology is not invasive, it is used in archaeology to study ancient human artifacts and ancient constructions and tombs. This way, the archaeologists can get information about the interior of these objects and sites without damaging them and, thus, preserve their cultural heritage. For these reasons, laser scanning is being used to study and explore the interior of ancient Nabatean buildings in the city of Petra, in Jordan.

2. Petra is an important archaeological site and it was the capital of the Ancient Nabatean kingdom. It is located in a narrow and dry valley, in the middle of the desert, and it is entirely sculpted in the stone of the mountain. It includes tombs of important Nabatean kings and citizens, like "Al-Khaznah" (the treasure), which is a big and very detailed construction sculpted in the rock of the narrow defile. This magnificent building, like "Ad Deir" (the monastery), another construction of similar characteristics and proportions, presents Hellenistic architectonic elements.

3. Traditionally, archaeologists believed that the original masons used ropes and platforms in order to build the constructions from the top to the ground. The scans showed that they put giant steps on the rock in order to construct it and nobody was hanging dangerously in high altitude.

4. Archaeologist found evidence of a big garden pool area in the Southern Terrace. It was like an oasis in the middle of the desert. The scans showed to the archaeologists that the Southern Terrace was part of a large architectural project.

5. By using the ground penetrating radar, archaeologists found a hidden staircase. This is an important discovery since this opened a new terrain of exploration for the researchers. This site was believed, according to the legend, to hide the treasures of the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs.

6. Technology is changing archaeology because, in the past, archaeologists had to excavate and, many times, to damage part of the ancient buildings and artifacts in order to analyze them. Today, new technology allows them to see what is inside tombs and ancient buildings, and to study small and complicated details without damaging its heritage.

Dawes Act
vredina [299]

1. Sincere individuals thought that if Native Americans adopted white clothing and ways, they would try first-hand how much better it was and leave behind their native culture, thought as uncivilized by that time. As they would become more assimilated to the American society, the Government wouldn't have to overlook their welfare.

2. The Dawes Act, named after its creator Senator Henry Dawes of Massachusetts, allowed the President to survey Native American tribal land and divide it into allotments to be handed to Native Americans as individual property.

3. Native Americans registered on a tribal "roll" were granted allotments of reservation land. They had to leave behind their culture and adopt the white American one. If they did so, they were granted U.S. citizenship.

4. Excess land after the distributed one to tribal members was sold on the open market. The land allotted to Native American families were a lot of the time desertic, and could not sustain them. The self-sufficient farming techniques were very different from tribal ones. Many of the tribal members didn't want to take up agriculture, and the ones that did couldn't afford tools, seeds and so to get started. Inheritance was also a problem: if there were many inherent, the parcelled allotments wasn't enough to sustain all of them.

5. The government succeeded in erasing a vital part of tribal culture, the common property of the land, setting the foundations for their assimilation and the destruction of their culture. In the long term, these various cultures still exist, despite the government's efforts on the contrary. If the government wanted to protect Native American rights, it failed.

In the monkeys paw what’s the third event to take place in the story
Elina [12.6K]

Answer:

Their son comes back but, it's to late.

Explanation:

Mr. White retrieves the paw from its place downstairs. Mrs. White orders him to make the wish two more times until he finally complies. He makes the wish, and as they wait, the candle goes out. They hear the clock, the creak of a stair, and the sound of a mouse. At last Mr. White goes downstairs. His match goes out, and before he can strike another, he hears a knock at the door. Another knock sounds, and Mr. White dashes upstairs. Mrs. White hears the third knock and says it’s Herbert. She realizes he hadn’t returned right after the wish had been made because he’d had to walk two miles from the graveyard to their house.

Mr. White begs her not to open the door, but she breaks free and runs downstairs. As she struggles to reach the bolt, the knocking becomes more insistent. Mr. White searches frantically for the paw, which had dropped to the floor. As Mrs. White pulls back the bolt, Mr. White finds the paw and makes a final wish. The knocking stops, and Mrs. White cries out. Mr. White dashes downstairs and sees that beyond the door, the street is empty.
