How much bigger is 1 1/4 than 5/8

1 \frac{1}{4} is twice as big or \frac{5}{8} bigger than \frac{5}{8}

To figure this out, we need to change this mixed number (1 \frac{1}{4}) to have the same denominator as \frac{5}{8}

So, we already know that \frac{8}{8} is equal to 1, so al we have to do is change the \frac{1}{4} to \frac{?}{8}

To find that out we just see how we get from 4 to 8 (multiply by 2), so all we do is multiply the 1 by 2 and we get 2 for our numerator. So, \frac{1}{4} =  \frac{2}{8}

Now we add the \frac{8}{8} to the \frac{2}{8} and we get \frac{10}{8} which is \frac{5}{8} bigger or twice as much as \frac{5}{8} since we have to multiply by 2 to get the 5 to a 10 as the numerator.

I hope this helped!! :))

A rectangular swimming pool is twice as long as it is wide. A small concrete sidewalk surrounds the pool and is a constant 2 fee
Naddika [18.5K]

Answer:

The dimensions of the pool are:

Width: 8.944 feet

Length: 17.888 feet

Step-by-step explanation:

From Geometry, the area of a rectangle (A), measured in square feet, is determined by the following equations:

A = w\cdot l (1)

Where:

w - Width, measured in feet.

l - Length, measured in feet.

If we know that w = x, l = 2\cdot x and A = 160\,ft^{2}, then we get the following second order polynomial:

2\cdot x^{2}-160 = 0 (1)

And we solve the expression for x:

2\cdot x^{2} = 160

x^{2} = 80

x = \sqrt{80}\,ft

x \approx 8.944\,ft

Then, the dimensions of the pool are, respectively:

w \approx 8.944\,ft and l \approx 17.888\,ft
