The word is not the thing it represents. That idea is the characteristic that language is <u>abstract</u>. Language could be arbitrary, ambiguous or abstract. Language are arbitrary because words are not fundamentally connected to what they represent and language could also be ambiguous because what they mean is not clear cut and lastly, words can be abstract because they are not concrete or tangible because they cannot be held or felt, they are not the thing they represent. These are the three characteristics of verbal communication.
