The Civil War was disastrous for the Creek Nation (also known as the Muscogee people), even though the majority of the tribe wished to be neutral. The first three battles of the war in Indian Territory happened when Confederate forces attacked a large and neutral band led by Opothle Yahola. Eventually, hundreds of Creek men fought on both the Union and Confederate sides.
