Substance use refers to ingesting drugs or alcohol, including cigarettes, illegal narcotics, prescription medicines, inhalants, and even some substances that are not drugs at all, such as solvents.
People such as Bob, using substances socially, are not necessarily addicts, nor have a substance use disorder. Only if they go into a pattern of harmful use, can we define it as substance abuse
