Explanation:

There are two type of cells in the body of a multicellular organisms. These are somatic cells and reproductive or germ cells.  Reproductive cells undergo meiosis to form gametes. Somatic cells divide by mitosis to increase the number of similar cells.

As a result of mitosis, a parent cell is divided into two daughter cells.  

The daughter cells produced after mitosis are genetically identical, thus have the same chromosome number as in parent cell.
