US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (also know as ARPA)  funded the workable prototype of the Internet during 1960s, developed a network of Computers, otherwise called as ARPANET.

Later, during 1969, ARPANET was tested by transmitting data between Kleinrock's lab at UCLA and the Stanford Research Station,  The invention of internet dates back to even before 1960 when Licklider conceived a theory of an “Intergalactic Network”.  

Intergalactic Network refers to concept of single network. Later many researchers and scientists improved the concept and invented a “packet switching” technology that transmits electronic data effectively. This paves the birth of Internet.
