The territory was bought by Thomas Jefferson from Napoleon Bonaparte by the request of western farmer was Louisiana.This event is known as the Louisiana Purchase. The United States bought the total of 828,000 sq miles at the cost of 15 million US dollars. This purchase extend the area of the USA along the Mississippi River which doubled the size of the country.

However Thomas Jefferson was asked by the western farmers to buy this land. The farmers along the Mississippi river used the river to transport and sell the goods to the gulf of New mexico. So Thomas Jefferson wanted to protect the farmers.

Moreover,he saw that saw of the profits are going to the french territory as the farmers are selling goods in the french area.All these things inspired Jefferson to buy  Louisiana.
