36.25 = 8.75*x
36.25/8.75 = x

⇒\text{Area of the rug} = 36\frac{1}{4} = \frac{145}{4}=36.25 square feet.

and

width of a rug(w) = 8\frac{3}{4} =8.75 feet.

By definition of area;

A = l \times w

Substitute the given values we get;

36.25 = 8.75l

Divide both sides by 8.75 we get;

l=4.14285714 feet

Therefore, the length of the rug  is, 4.14285714 feet
