The Gold Foil Experiment was Rutherford's observation that proved the existence of a small, dense center to atoms, which became known as the nucleus. He found that after shooting a beam of alpha particles at a sheet of golden foil, a few of the particles dispersed and deflected at a 90 degree angle rather than passing through it as he had hoped.
