Answer:

The configuration item described is that of the geographic location of the scenic framework.

Explanation:

The novels are literary works which can refer to diversified themes; the novels are divided into a group of primary elements that should not be missing so that it has a good structure; these are:

  • The plot is a series of events that take place throughout the novel.
  • Characters: are the people involved in the development of the plot.
  • Scenic framework: it refers to the time and space (location) that the argument evolves.
  • Narrator: This may be one of the characters in the novel, whether the main or secondary, but he is responsible for telling the story.

Answer:

The element of setting described in the excerpt provides the geographical context.

Explanation:

Nick Carraway was the cousin of Daisy Buchanan and also the neighbor of Jay Gatsby in the story “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. He had been educated in Yale and fought in the First World War. After his return from the war, he saw that his home had drastically changed, deciding to move to New York. The passage provided in the question is from the first section of the novel where Nick observed that his home had changed from what he used to remember. Providing the geographical description of the setting of his home, the author through Nick, is giving us readers an insight into the physical image of the place.

Further Explanation:

F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous 1925 novel "The Great Gatsby" tells the story of an American Dream that is represented in the characters of Jay Gatsby, Nick, Daisy and Tom among others. Jay Gatsby had been previously in a relationship with the now married Mrs. Daisy Buchanan.

The excerpt provided in the question shows the author's description of the geographical setting of the novel. The lines are from the first chapter of the novel where Nick explains his life after college. He had fought in the Great war, which is World War I, and then came home to a scene which was "instead of being the warm center of the world, the Middle West now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe". This drastic change and different scene of what his memory of home used to be made him leave home, leave the plan of staying at home and instead get into the bond business.

Nick also claims that he "thoroughly enjoyed" the war which might have left him changed forever, making his home seem so different to what he used to like. Finding that it no longer suited his 'taste' of what he want in life, he moved out of home and instead went to live in New York City, specifically Wall Street where he would be among 'fighters'. Newly shifted from the Midwest, Nick was at first enamored and attracted to the glitz and the glamorous lifestyle of his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan. But he soon found out the hidden discomfort and the facade that everyone seemed to be living. Also, his neighbor jay Gatsby's repeated attempts of trying to get daisy back and his eventual death also made Nick see the false 'American Dream' that everyone seems to be running after.
