Instead, you could write, “They went and made their favorite foods the the upcoming party.”

Lucas was surveying the grade on what their favorite sport was.
I reluctantly did my chores even though I didn't want to.
Uncle Tom was a jovial person but could lose his temper if someone called him old.
After I didn't watch the dog like I was told, mom scolded me for not paying attention to the muddy pawprints tracked around the house.
Jackson grabbed his golfing paraphernalia out of the golf cart.
The last time we visited, Gerald's house was even shabbier than it was now.
Lee Anne was overwhelmed enough by school so she had done her homework perfunctorily.
