The pH of a solution measures the [H3O+] in the solution. If one solution has a pH of 4 and another solution has a pH of 3, how

does the [H3O+] in the two solutions compare?
They are in a 1:1 ratio.
They are in a 1:10 ratio.
They are in a 1:100 ratio.

Answer:

The correct answer is:'They are in a 1:10 ratio'.

Explanation:

The pH of the solution is defined as negative logarithm of hydrogen ions concentration in a solution.

Mathematically written as: pH=-\log[H^+]

The pH of solution-1 = 4

4=-\log[H_3O^+]

[H_3O^+]=10^{-4} M

The pH of solution-2 = 3

3=-\log[H_3O^+]'

[H_3O^+]'=10^{-3} M

The ratio of hydronium ion concentrations:

\frac{[H_3O^+]}{[H_3O^+]'}=\frac{10^{-4}}{10^{-3}}=\frac{1}{10}

Over long time scales the solubility-temperature feedback (below), can affect climate. An increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrat
Mars2501 [29]

The fact that CO2 is released from oceans due to further rise in temperature is an example of a negative feedback.

A negative feedback is one in which the process that produces the feedback is interrupted. That is, the process is stopped as a result of the feedback received.

In this case, CO2  which leads to global warming dissolves in the ocean which serves a large sink for the gas. However, as the increase in ocean temperatures causes decrease in solubility of CO2, more CO2 is released leading to further temperature rise. This is an example of a negative feedback loop.

A) At 0 C water forms ice but as mentioned above F) water's greatest density occurs at 4 C and it decreases below 4 C so ice is lighter than 4C water, thus, at 0C ice comes to surface and acts as insulator thereby preventing lower water from freezing.
