Y = 4x           .....(a)

3x - y = 1.    ......(b)

Substitute y = 4x in (a) into (b)

3x - y = 1......(b)

3x - 4x = 1

-x = 1

x = -1

Recall, y = 4x ........(a)

y = 4*(-1)

y = -4.

Therefore, x = -1, and y = -4.

If y = 4x then you'd input that information into your equation making: 3x-4x = 1
The correct solution is: 3(-1)-4(-1) = 1

Help! It says that I need to determine If both equations represent lines which are parallel, perpendicular, or none...
12345 [234]
    4x + 2y = 8     (1)
    8x + 4y = -4y  (2)

A) Two lines are parallel if they have the same gradient
       - putting both equations into the gradient- intercept form ( y = mx + c where m is the gradient)
            (1) 4x + 2y = 8
                          2y = 8 - 4x
                            y = -2x + 4

            (2) 8x + 4y = -4y
                          8x = -4y - 4y
                            y = \frac{-8x}{-8}
                            y = -x
   Thus the gradient of the two equations are different and as such the two lines are not parallel

B) When two lines are perpendicular, the product of their gradient is -1
                   m_{1} * m_{2} = p
                                             p = (-2) * (-1)
                                             p =  2
          ∴ the two lines are not perpendicular either.

Thus these lines are SKEWED LINES

The center of a circle is at (2, −5) and its radius is 12.
stiv31 [10]

Answer:

The equation of the circle is (x - 2)² + (y + 5)² = 144 ⇒ A

Step-by-step explanation:

The form of the equation of the circle is (x - h)² + (y - k)² = r², where

  • r is the radius of the circle
  • h, k are the coordinates of the center of the circle

Let us solve the question

∵ The center of the circle is at (2, -5)

→ From the rule above

∴ h = 2 and k = -5

∵ The radius of the circle is 12

∴ r = 12

→ Substitute the values of r, h, and k in the form of the equation above

∵ (x - 2)² + (y - -5)² = (12)²

∴ (x - 2)² + (y + 5)² = 144

∴ The equation of the circle is (x - 2)² + (y + 5)² = 144
