They are two independent statements, but they can still be linked. A comma implies that they are exactly related, but the semicolon shows that while they are independent, the second phrase relies on the first for the subject [women].

Facilitated transport is a type of passive transport where the molecules move from region of high concentration to low concentration. Since they are moving along the concentration gradient, energy is not required for the process. But it does require some special membrane proteins hence the term "facilitated". The proteins are required for movement of large and polar molecules because even their diffusion is difficult through the non polar lipid layer of membrane.

Here, glucose is moving from high to low concentration so it's diffusion but it is using membrane protein because it is polar hence it is facilitated diffusion transport.
