They study primary sources and secondary sources to understand the timeline given, example is Lincolns assassination, There are secondary and primary sources for the event that people use now to understand the event that happened long ago. Another way historians find data if radiocarbon dating, where they determine the age of an artifact to understand the meaning and what happened.
