When the protein gramicidin is integrated into a membrane, an H channel forms and the membrane becomes very permeable to protons

(H ions). If gramicidin is added to an actively respiring muscle cell, how would it affect the rates of electron transport, proton pumping, and ATP synthesis in oxidative phosphorylation?
a.remains the same
b.proton pumping rate
c.electron transport rate

Answer:

The rates of electron transport, proton pumping, remains the same.

There is a decrease in the rate of ATP synthesis in Oxidative Phosphorylation.

Explanation:

Gramicidin is a proteinous (peptide) that forms spores. Gramicidin causes a series of harmful actions when it comes in contact with a membrane.

When Gramicidin comes in contact with or it is integrated into the membrane of an actively respiring membrane, the permeability of the membrane increases such that it begins to lose protons causing the production of ATP( Adenosine Triphosphate) in the muscles during oxidative phosphorylation to cease.

Although, the rates of electron transport remains the same and the pumping of protons remains the same.

Answer:

c.electron transport rate

Explanation:

Gramicidin is a substance which blocks the production of ATP by inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis process occurs in the process of cellular respiration, responsible for the reduction of  energy and cell death also occurs. Oxidative phosphorylation is a process in which ATP molecules are formed by the transfer of electrons from NADH to oxygen. This process occurs in the mitochondria of the cell in the availability of oxygen where ATP production occurs. so electron rate is greatly affected and low amount of ATP are produced.

<h3>Producers</h3>

Explanation:

Producers are autotrophic organisms capable of producing complex organic compounds from simple inorganic molecules through the process of photosynthesis ( using light energy) or through chemosythesis (using chemical energy).

Examples are green plants, small scrubs, phytoplankton, algae

In the 19th century, Gregor Mendel performed a series of experiments on pea plants that led to the establishment of the field of
guajiro [1.7K]

This is a very easy paragraph analysis question. The answer is c. "Over time, scientific knowledge is reevaluated and extended through new scientific research." The reason why the answer is C., is because the chronological order of the study of genetics is as follows:

- Mendel does his pea plants experiments, but did not know how traits were passed to the offspring.

- Avery concludes that DNA is the "material" that passes on traits to the offspring, probably using Mendel's research and his own research (pneuonimia virus research) as well.

- Since the existence of DNA was published, Watson and Crick used it to identify an accurate model of the structure of DNA, using the four bases: cytosine, adenine, guanine, and thymine.

Overall, we see a trend of scientists publishing results based on what scientists did before.

Answer:

The ability of caffeine to inhibit adenosine receptors, plays a very important role in heightened alertness and sleeplessness.

Explanation:

"<em><u>Caffeine</u></em>" (<em>1,3,7-trimethylxanthine</em>) is an alkaloid obtained from plants. It has a chemical formula of C8H10N4O2.

Caffeine is generally <em>hydrophillic</em> but sufficiently <em>lipophilic</em> to pass through all biological membranes and readily cross the blood-brain barrier.

Therefore can bind with the adenosine receptors. Due to the blocking of adenosine inhibitory effects through its receptors held by paraxanthine and caffeine, it indirectly affects the release of <u>norepinephrine, dopamine, acetylcholine, serotonin, glutamate</u> e.t.c.

The release of the above-mentioned hormones have a great impact on the heightened alertness of the body, especially <em>dopamine</em> and <em>serotonin</em>.
