The chlorofluorocarbons are the compound formed by three constituents that is carbon, fluorine and chlorine. CFC's are broken in the presence of sunlight that results in the separation of all the three molecules in the environment.

On release of these molecules in stratosphere, chlorine monoxide and oxygen is formed by the reaction of ozone and chlorine.

Cl + O3 = ClO + O2

As released in environment this chlorine monoxide further reacts with oxygen, which breaks down the chlorine monoxide and releases chlorine molecule which contributes to diminish the ozone molecule, and this cycle continues.

ClO + O = Cl + O2
