The organic waste from one organism may provide shelter for one organism or may be a source of energy for another organism.

An example is the excreta of herbivore animals is used by dung beetles  as breeding chambers and source of food. Organic litter from plants also offer shelter and shade (from direct sunlight) for small organisms such as earthworm and crickets.
