The Berlin Wall was built in response to the Communist East Germans fleeing to the Capitalist Western part of Berlin. As a result, the East Germans and Soviets built a wall around the Capitalist part of Berlin, which increased tensions with the west. During the end of the cold war, East Germany held democratic elections and agreed to reunite with the west, resulting in the wall no longer being necessary. It was taken down, and Germany was reunited.
