Francis Drake (1540 -1596) was an English sailor, captain, privateer, slave trader and explorer during the denominated Elizabethan era.

He completed the second circumnavigation around the planet, between 1577 and 1580, following Magellan's route. Anyway, the was the first person to complete the whole circumnavigation voyage as the captain of the expedition, as Magellan died before the completion of his expedition and had to be replaced by Elcano (Spanish sailor in the same expedition).

Drake started conflicts with the Spanish in Californian coasts and subsequently leaded English ships several times against the Spanish Armada. His acts of privateering, at which the stole gold and other precious metals from Spanish ships, made that the Spanish regarded him as a pirate and offered a price for his head.
