An open-end manometer containing mercury is connected to a container of gas, as depicted in Sample Exercise 10.2. What is the pr

essure of the enclosed gas in torr in each of the following situations?
a) The mercury in the arm attached to the gas is 15.4 mm higher than in the one open to the atmosphere; atmospheric pressure is 0.985 atm.
b) The mercury in the arm attached to the gas is 12.3 mm lower than in the one open to the atmosphere; atmospheric pressure is 0.99 atm.

Answer:

For A = 733.2 torr

For B = 740.1 torr

Explanation:

Given data:

For A

Height = 15.4 mm

Pressure of atmosphere = 0.985 atm ( 0.985 ×760 = 748.6 mmHg)

Pressure of gas = ?

For B

Height = 12.3 mm

Pressure of atmosphere = 0.99 atm ( 0.99×760 = 752.4 mmHg)

Pressure of gas = ?

Solution:

For A

P( gas) = P (atmosphere) - 15.4 mmHg

P( gas) = 748.6 mmHg - 15.4 mmHg

P( gas) = 733.2 mmHg or 733.2 torr

For B

P( gas) = P (atmosphere) - 12.3 mmHg

P( gas) = 752.4 mmHg - 12.3 mmHg

P( gas) = 740.1 mmHg

 or

740.1 torr

What will most likely happen when a warmer air mass exists above a polar ice sheet?
Andre45 [30]
I believe it is "The temperature of the ice sheet will be lowered" because it will most likely lower just a bit due to the heat. It's not going to fully melt but it will lower just a bit.

You have a total body concentration of 300 mOsM and total body volume of 3 liters. If you add 0.5 L of a solution containing 150
Archy [21]

Answer:

The new total body concentration would be 300 mOsM

Explanation:

In order to do this, we need to convert all concentrations to moles.

First, with the total body concentration, we have the initial volume of 3 liters and the concentration of 300 M (I will omit til the end the part of mOs)

The moles of the body concentration in this volume is:

moles = M * V

moles = 300 * 3 = 900 moles

To this moles, we add 150 moles of NaCL so, the total moles now is:

moles = 900 + 150 = 1050 moles

Finally, we can calculate the concentration with the new volume of 3.5 L (the sum of 3 and 0.5 liters added):

M = 1050 / 3.5

M = 300 mOsM

So the concentration remains the same as initial

Which is an example of maintaining structure?
Murrr4er [49]

Answer: healing a wound

Explanation:

The healing of the wound is the example of maintenance of the structure. The wound is the injury which disturbs the continuity of the skin surface. It can affect the dermal and epidermal layer of the skin. The wound if severe or deep can damage the bones. The wound can be caused by the cut, blow or punch, impact or fall from height. The healing of the wound may take several days to weeks. The wound healing involves the replacement of the damaged or destroyed cells or tissues by new cells or tissues in the body or the wound site.
