Seems as though she must be angry, or embarrassed. That is the only time your cheeks would heat up like that. The author is using a simile. A simile is comparing something using like or as. :)

The purposes of comic relief would be A. And D. Adding comic relief to a story can ease the tension of the story, and there should be a balance between seriousness and comedy.
The other options may work for CERTAIN stories, but not the general idea of the concept.
