When a psychologist wants to conduct a research study, the study design will be reviewed for ethical standards before an "institutional review board."

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an administrative body set up to ensure the rights and welfare of human research subjects enlisted to take an interest in research exercises led under the sponsorship of the foundation with which it is partnered.

The IRB is accused of the duty of looking into, preceding its introduction, all examination (regardless of whether financed or not) including human members. The IRB is worried about securing the welfare, rights, and protection of human subjects. The IRB has the specialist to affirm, object, screen, and require changes in all exploration exercises that fall inside its locale as indicated by both the government controls and institutional arrangement.

The study design will be reviewed and evaluated by the institutional review board. This is the committee that decides whether the methods used in the study are ethical and appropriate. It is also referred to as the ethical review board.
