Which of the following correctly defines the principles of kinetic molecular theory?

Chemistry

Answer:

  • Option <em>a. There are no attactions between particles.</em>

Explanation:

These are the main <em>principles </em><em>of kinetic molecular theory</em> of gases:

1) Gases are formed by a huge number of particles (atoms or molecules) in constant, random motion.

This, along with the number four below, makes false the option d, that "When particles collide, they become motionless".

2) The particles (molecules or atoms) are very small and occupy a neglectible volume. Then, the space between particles is much larger than the size of  the particles (most of the volume of a gas is  empty space).

This makes false the option b, that "The space between the particles is the same as the size of the particles"

3) <em>There is no force of attraction between gas particles or between the particles and the walls of the container.</em>

This is precisely the same stated in the choice a. There are no attractions between particles. So, this is the correct principle.

4) The collisions between gas particles or with the walls of the vessel are perfectly elastic. This means that there is not loss or energy when due to collisions.

As stated above, this contradicts the choice d.

5) The average kinetic energy of a set of gas particles depends only on the temperature of the gas.

In fact, the kinetic energy is directly related with the temperaute: as the temperature increases, the kinetic energy increases.

Since, the kinetic energy is also proportional to the square of the speed, the higher the temperature the higher the speed. So, particles move faster when temperature increases.

In conclusion, this contradicts the option c, that particles move slower when temperature increases.

What would happen to the oxygen atoms in ozone if the ozone layer were completely destroyed by ultraviolet radiation?
ale4655 [162]

When the oxygen atoms in ozone layer were destroyed by ultraviolet radiations the individual oxygen atoms will make bond with each other and form paired oxygen molecules again to form ozone.

What is the ozone layer?

Ozone layer has a high concentration of ozone (O3) in comparison to the rest of the atmosphere, although it is still low in comparison to other gases in the stratosphere.

The ozone layer contains less than ten parts per million of ozone, whereas the normal ozone concentration in the Earth's atmosphere is around 0.3 parts per million. The ozone layer is mostly found in the lower stratosphere.

H2SO4 is a strong acid because the first proton ionizes 100%. The Ka of the second proton is 1.1x10-2. What would be the pH of a
forsale [732]

Question options:

a) 2.05

b) 0.963

c) 0.955

d) 1.00

Answer:

b) 0.963

Explanation:

H2SO4→ HSO4- + H3O+

HSO4- + H2O ⇌ SO42- + H3O+

Construct ICE table:

        HSO4- (aq)    +    H2O        ⇌      SO42- (aq)     +     H3O+ (aq)

I          0.1                  solid &                   0                          0.1

C         -x                     liquid                 + x                            + x

E         0.1 - x          are ignored              x                          0.1 + x

Calculate x

Ka = products/reactants

  = \frac{[SO42-] [H3O+]}{[HSO4-]}

0.011 = \frac{x (0.1 + x)}{0.1 - x}

0.011 x (0.1 -x) = o.1x + x^2

0.0011 - 0.011 x - o.1x - x^2 = 0

0.0011 - 0.011 x - x^2 = 0

Use formula to solve for quadratic equation

x = { -b +,-\sqrt{b^2 - 4ac / 2a

a = -1, b = -0.111, c = 0.001

Solve for x

x = \sqrt[-(-o.111)]{(-0.111)^2 - 4(-1) (0.0011) }  / 2(-1)

x = 0.111 +,- \sqrt{0.012321 + 0.0044} / -2

x = 0.111 +,- \sqrt{0.016721} / -2

x = \frac{0.111 +, - 0.1293}{-2}

x = \frac{0.111 + 0.1293}{-2}   , x = \frac{0.111  - 0.1293}{-2}

x = \frac{0.2403}{-2}    , x = \frac{0.0183}{-2}

x = - 0.12015  , x = 0.00915

x cannot be negative, so

x = 0.00915 M

Calculate [H3O+]

[H3O+] = 0.1 M + x

[H3O+] = 0.1 M + 0.00915 M

[H3O+] = 0.10915 M

Clculate pH

pH = - log [ H3O+]

pH = - log [ 0.10915]

pH = 0.963
