Membrane lipids in tissue samples obtained from different parts of the leg of a reindeer have different fatty acid compositions.

Membrane lipids from tissue near the hooves contain a larger proportion of unsaturated fatty acids than those from tissue in the upper leg. What is the significance of this observation? Include a molecular-level explanation for the effects of the unsaturated fatty acids.

Answer:

The presence of a larger proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in membranes imparts them fluidity at lower temperatures as required to maintain their normal functioning.

Explanation:

The proportion of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids in membranes regulates their fluidity. At lower temperatures, membranes become more rigid. To maintain their normal fluidity, the proportion of the unsaturated fatty acids in membranes is increased. The unsaturated fatty acids have double bonds in their hydrocarbon tails which in turn do not allow their tight packing and impart fluidity to the membrane core.

At higher temperatures, membranes become more fluid and therefore, the proportion of the unsaturated fatty acids is reduced. The tissues of reindeer at the body's extremities such as those near hooves are exposed to surroundings and thereby, lose heat and have lower temperatures. To maintain the fluidity of membranes, the cells of these tissues incorporate more of the unsaturated fatty acids in their membranes as compared to the tissues in the upper legs where the body temperature is relatively higher.

Which of the following is a design theory that translates problems into mathematics to enable designers from multiple fields to
Rufina [12.5K]

INFUSO DESIGN is a design theory that translates problems into mathematics to allow designers from various fields to incorporate their learnings into design.

 • D. INFUSION PROJECT

What is INFUSED DESIGN?

An approach for establishing effective collaboration between designers from different engineering fields. In infused design, the design problem representation is brought up to a mathematical meta-level, which is common to all engineering disciplines. The reasoning about the problem is then done by using mathematical terminology and tools that, due to their generality, are the same for all engineers, disregarding their background. This gives engineers an opportunity to infuse their work with knowledge, methods, and solutions shared by specialists from other engineering fields.

With this information, we can conclude that In infused design, the design problem representation is brought up to a mathematical meta-level, which is common to all engineering disciplines

Predict how many double helical molecules of dna will be present in the gametes of the fruit fly, drosophila, a diploid organism
anygoal [31]
The answer is four double-helical molecules of DNA, which match up to four unreplicated chromosomes. In addition, for fruit fly gametes the haploid number is 4 in which can be written as N = 4. The meiosis is a procedure in which the amount of chromosomes per cell is cut in partial in excess of the parting of homologous chromosomes in a diploid cell.

The concept of evolution by way of natural selection is a central tenet in biology that has been tested in numerous ways by many
ANTONII [103]
A hypothesis that can be accepted as true based on repeated experimentation with similar results

A hypothesis is a supposition made by the scientist. In order for a hypothesis to be a scientific hypothesis, the scientific method requires for it to be tested. If a hypothesis cannot be tested, it cannot be scientific hypothesis. It is important to state the hypothesis clearly at the beginning of a scientific paper. This enables the reader to understand the problem.
