The number of machine breakdowns in a month follows a Poisson distribution with a mean of 3. An insurance contract covers repair

s to the machine if more than N breakdowns occur in a month. N is selected to be the highest number such that the contract will provide repairs in at least 25% of the months. Determine N.

Answer:

N= 3

Step-by-step explanation:

given data

mean \lambda =  3

provide repairs at least =  25%

solution

as here for poisson distribution

P(X=k) = \frac{(\lambda )^ke^{-\lambda }}{k!}   ......................1

so here

P(X>n) = 0.25

and

P(X>n) = e^{-3 } \sum_{X=n}^{\infty } \frac{(3 )^k}{k!}\geq 0.25      ..............2

so

P(X>3) = 0.3528

and

P(X>4) = 0.1847

so here

N= 3

Arlecino [84]

Answer:

x = 3\sqrt{13} = 10.8

Step-by-step explanation:

Both problems are done the same way.  I will do the first one and you do the second one.  OK?

Move the radius x to make a right triangle.  The 6 unit segment bisects the chord.  So, the legs of the right triangle are 6 and 9

The use the Pythagorean theorem to find x, which is the hypotenuse of the right triangle.   Now,

6^{2}  + 9^{2}  = x^{2}

x^{2} = 36 + 81 = 117\\x = \sqrt{117} = 3\sqrt{13}= 10.8

None of the answer choices are to the nearest tenth.  So, I am confused about that.

In  the second problem, the answer should be 11.2

zavuch27 [327]

Answer:

a) 0.2

b) 0.2

c) 0.5

Step-by-step explanation:

Let S be the event "the car stops at the signal.

In the attached figure you can see a tree describing all possible scenarios.

For the first question the red path describes stopping at the first light but not stopping at the second. We can determine the probability of this path happening by multiplying the probabilities on the branches of the tree, thus

P(a)=0.4\times0.5=0.2

For the second one the blue path describes the situation

P(b)=0.4\times 0.5=0.2

For the las situation the sum of the two green path will give us the answer

P(c)=0.6\times 0.5 + 0.4\times 0.5=0.3+0.2=0.5
