The reason they fought in the first place was because Mexico abolished slavery. Texan's feared that they would soon abolish it there too. I know for sure also that once they became independent it took awhile for the U.S. to annex them. Mostly because it would become a slave state and they wanted an even number of both slave and non-slave states.
