Populisim became popular because it put policies in place that relieved some of the farmers hardship of farmers in the 1890s. The fall of Populism happened mostly because the party itself couldn't get along some wanted Independence and some wanted to join the Democratic Party they were fighting over silver and the country went into a financial panic when the price of silver dropped and then rose again
