Dear HopellennibH, you need to FOIL. It is an algorithm to use when multiplying two binomials. Here are the steps. The "F" means to multiply the first two terms which gives you x squared. The "O" means to multiply the first term by the outer term, which gives you  -8x. The "I" means to multiply the inner terms, which  -9 times x which gives you -9x. The "L" means to multiply the last terms, which are -9 times -8, which gives you 72. Write the terms in standard form and you have x squared  -17x +72.

Answer:

x = 400 when y = 100

Step-by-step explanation:

This is a question in relation to direct variation.

y ∝ \sqrt{x}

y = k \sqrt{x}

Given that, y = 45, x = 81. Then;

45 = k \sqrt{81}

45 = 9k

k = \frac{45}{9}

k = 5

Thus the relationship among the variables is;

y = 5 \sqrt{x}

If y = 100, then;

100 = 5 \sqrt{x}

\sqrt{x} = \frac{100}{5}

\sqrt{x} = 20

x = (20)^{2}

x = 400

Therefore, x = 400 when y = 100.

On the line segment x=2, f depends only on y :

f(2,y) = g(y) = 4y^2 - 4y - 4

Find the critical points of g.

\dfrac{dg}{dy} = 8y - 4 = 0 \implies y = \dfrac12

At this critical point, we have

g\left(\dfrac12\right) = f\left(2,\dfrac12\right) = 3

Check the value of f at the endpoints of the line segment.

f\left(2,0\right) = 4

f\left(2,2\right) = 12

So we have

\min\left\{f(x,y) \mid x=2 \text{ and } 0 \le y \le 2\right\} = \boxed{3} \text{ at } (x,y) = \left(2,\dfrac12\right)

Can somebody please help me with this problem??? I can't figure it out...
Lorico [155]

We can use the Pythagorean theorem to solve. (a² + b² = c²)

Fill in with what we know → 6² + b² = 11²

Simplify → 36 + b² = 121

Subtract 36 to both sides → 36 - 36 + b² = 121 - 36

Simplify → b² = 85

Take the root of both sides → √b² = √85

Simplify → b = 9.2195...

Round if necessary → 9.2195 = 9.22

Hence, b equals 9.2195.. (unrounded) or 9.22 (rounded).

Best of Luck!
