La capacidad de enlace del carbono se debe a que tiene en su orbital externo cuatro electrones monovalentes los cuales facilmente pueden crear lazos estables con otros elementos quimicos u otros carbonos.

El carbono tiene por este motivo elevadas posibilidades de cambinaciones consigo mismo y con otros elementos y por lo tanto, de esta manera da lugar a una gran cantidad de compuestos estables.

La configuracion electronica del carbono is la siguiente:

6C = 1s2, 2s2, 1p1x,  p1y, 2p0z

Su numero atomico es 6, en consecuencia, tiene completo el primer nivel de energia pero sin embargo, en el segundo nivel solo tiene 4 electrones, debido a esto el carbono debe compartir los electrones externos en enlaces covalentes para lograr la configuracion de un gas noble.

Esto esta basado en la teoria de la hibridacion de los orbitales
