A gene is a segment of DNA that encodes the information needed for the synthesis of certain functional products called PROTEIN. The genes undergo expression i.e. transcription into RNA and translation into protein. This protein is responsible for the phenotype living organisms exhibit.

The genetic material in most organisms is the DNA, which is a complex molecule and one of the two types of nucleic acids containing long polynucleotide chains. The DNA stores the genetic information needed for the expression of genes i.e. genetic code. The information are stored in the four nucleotide bases (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine) that constitutes the DNA.
