Waterways puts much emphasis on cash flow when it plans for capital investments. The company chose its discount rate of 8% based

on the rate of return it must pay its owners and creditors. Using that rate, Waterways then uses different methods to determine the best decisions for making capital outlays. This year Waterways is considering buying five new backhoes to replace the backhoes it now has. The new backhoes are faster, cost less to run, provide for more accurate trench digging, have comfort features for the operators, and have 1-year maintenance agreements to go with them. The old backhoes are working just fine, but they do require considerable maintenance. The backhoe operators are very familiar with the old backhoes and would need to learn some new skills to use the new backhoes. The following information is available to use in deciding whether to purchase the new backhoes.
Old Backhoes New Backhoes
Purchase cost when new $90,000 $202,784
Salvage value now $41,600
Investment in major overhaul needed in next year $55,510
Salvage value in 8 years $15,000 $90,000
Remaining life 8 years 8 years
Net cash flow generated each year $30,500 $43,800
(a) Evaluate in the following ways whether to purchase the new equipment or overhaul the old equipment. (Hint: For the old machine, the initial investment is the cost of the overhaul. For the new machine, subtract the salvage value of the old machine to determine the initial cost of the investment.)
(1) Using the net present value method for buying new or keeping the old
(2) Using the payback method for each choice. (Hint: For the old machine, evaluate the payback of an overhaul.)
(3) Comparing the profitability index for each choice.
(4) Calculate the internal rate of return factor for the new and old blackhoes.
(5) Comparing the internal rate of return for each choice to the required 8% discount rate.

Answer:

a.when a corporation owns more than 50% of the common stock of another company

Explanation:

Many a times, a parent company holds stock in it's own subsidiary company. Consolidation refers to presentation of combined profitability of a group wherein a Parent Co holds majority of the common stock i.e more than 50% of the common stock in it's subsidiary.

Such a presentation presents the combined picture of a group and helps in better comprehension and understanding by the users of the financial statements.

If a parent owns 100% stock in it's subsidiary, such subsidiary is referred to as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Collins Company borrowed $1,250,000 from BankTwo on January 1, 2016 in order to expand its mining capabilities. The five-year no
hoa [83]

Answer:

Collins Company must recognize $118,750 (which is annual interest paid on the capital) in its 2017 income statement as an expense item if the method of computing the interest is the flat rate method.

If it is reducing balance rate, then the amount deducted will equal $ 87,823

Explanation:

According to the principles of Financial Accounting, the interest portion of any loan must be entered as an expense item. The portion of the principal being paid back is recorded as part of the liability of the company in the period under consideration. It often goes by the term Loan Payable or Notes Payable.

Hence to arrive at the answers given above, you must note that the year in question is 2017 and that the loan took effect from January 2016.

When computing for interest payable, two methods may be used:

  1. Flat rate method: which requires that the interest rate applicable is computed on the capital and multiplied by the number of years the loan will run.

That is, $1,250,000 x 9.5% x 5 = Total Interest Rate Applicable.

= $593,750 so going by this method, the interest rate to be entered is

= $593, 750/5

= $118,750

   2. Reducing balance rate method: This requires the rate of interest to be applied each year succesievely having taken into account the capital which way paid in the previous year.

That is, [Initial Capital-Annual Payments] *9.5%

For year 2016, annual payment will be Zero. Given that the loan started in that year. In 2017 however, the annual payment will apply as shown below:

= [$1,250,000-$325,545] *9.5%

= $924, 455 * 9.5%

= $87,823 (approximately)

Cheers!

aleksklad [387]

Answer:

Hart Corp.'s note should be reported at $10,000

Maxx Inc.'s note should be reported at $7,883

Explanation:

Interest bearing notes that represent current accounts (due within one year) should be reported at face value. Hart Corp.'s note is due in nine months, so it should be reported at = $10,000

Maxx Inc.'s note must be recorded at present value because it is due in 5 years.

FV = $10,000 x 1.03⁵ = $11,592.74

now we must determine its present value using an 8% discount rate:

PV = $11,592.74 x 0.680 = $7,883
