Answer: Yes , in MgCl_2, two electrons from magnesium are transferred to chlorine atoms.

Explanation:

Ionic compound is formed by the transfer of electrons. For formation of a neutral ionic compound, the charges on cation and anion must be balanced. The cation is formed by loss of electrons by metals and anions are formed by gain of electrons by non metals.

For example : For formation of MgCl_2

Electronic configuration of magnesium:

[Mg]=1s^22s^22p^63s^2

Magnesium atom will loose two electrons to gain noble gas configuration and form magnesium cation with +2 charge.

[Mg^{2+}]=1s^22s^22p^63s^0

Electronic configuration of chlorine:

[Cl]=1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^5

Chlorine atom will gain one electron to gain noble gas configuration and form chloride ion with -1 charge.

[Cl^-]=1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^6

In Magnesium chloride two electrons from magnesium metal gets transferred to two chlorine atoms and thus MgCl_2 is formed.

If 3.6 g of aluminum completely reacts, how much Al2O3 (in grams) can be produced
marissa [1.9K]

The amount in grams of Al₂O₃ produced is approximately 6.80 g.

Aluminium reacts completely with oxygen(air) to produce Al₂O₃. The reaction can be represented with a chemical equation as follows:

AL + O₂ → Al₂O₃

Let's balance it

4AL + 3O₂ → 2Al₂O₃

4 moles of Aluminium reacts with 3 moles of Oxygen molecules to produce 2 moles of Aluminium oxide. Therefore,

Since, aluminium reacts completely, it is the limiting reagent in the reaction. Therefore,

Atomic mass of AL = 27 g

Molar mass of  Al₂O₃ = 101.96 g/mol

4(27 g) of AL gives 2(101.96 g) of  Al₂O₃

3.6 g of AL will give ?

cross multiply

mass of  Al₂O₃ produced = 3.6 × 203.92 / 108   = 734.112 / 108 = 6.797

mass of  Al₂O₃ produced = 6.80 g.

If 10.7 grams of NH4Cl is dissolved in enough water to make 800 mL of solution,what will be it's molarity
Ksju [112]

Answer;

Molarity = 0.25 M

Explanation;

Molarity is given by moles/Liter.

First we find moles:

Number of moles = Mass /molar mass

= (10.7g NH4Cl)/(53.5g/mol NH4Cl)

= 0.200 moles NH4Cl

Then  we convert to liters:

= (800mL)*(1L/1000mL) = 0.800L

Therefore; molarity = 0.2moles/0.8L

                                = 0.25M
