How is the mass of the atom calculated?

Chemistry
1 answer:
Bad White [126]3 years ago

Answer: By adding the number of protons and neutrons

Explanation:

Protons and neutrons have very similar masses and are used in calculating the mass of an atom. One would calculate the mass of an atom by doing the (mass of a proton) x (# of protons) + (mass of a neutron) x (# of neutrons). Electrons have such a small mass that their mass is considered negligible  and therefore is not included in mass calculations for atoms.

mass of a proton: 1.67262 × 10−27 kg

mass of a neutron: 1.67493×10−27 kg

mass of an electron: 9.10938 × 10-31 kg

Calculate the temperature required to make a 75.8 ml ballon initially at 57.9c change its value to 50.8ml
nika2105 [10]

Answer:

T₂ = 221.8 K

Explanation:

Given data:

Initial temperature = 57.9°C ( 57.9+273 =330.9 k)

Initial volume = 75.8 mL

Final volume = 50.8 mL

Final temperature = ?

Solution:

According to Charles's law,

V₁ /T₁= V₂/T₂

T₂ = V₂T₁/V₁

T₂ = 50.8 mL ×330.9 k / 75.8 mL

T₂ = 16809.72 mL.K/ 75.8 mL

T₂ = 221.8 K

A 100g of sample of a compound is combusted in excess oxygen and the products are 2.492g of CO2 and 0.6495 of H2O. Determine the
ruslelena [56]

The empirical formula : C₁₁O₁₄O₃

<h3>Further explanation</h3>

The assumption of the compound consists of C, H, and O

mass of C in CO₂ =

\tt \dfrac{12}{44}\times 2.492=0.680~g

mass of H in H₂O =

\tt \dfrac{2.1}{18}\times 0.6495=0.072~g

mass of O :

mass sample-(mass C + mass H)

\tt 1-(0.68+0.072)=0.248`g

mol of  C :

\tt \dfrac{0.68}{12}=0.056

mol of H :

\tt \dfrac{0.072}{1}=0.072

mol of O :

\tt \dfrac{0.248}{16}=0.0155

divide by 0.0155(the lowest ratio)

C : H : O ⇒

\tt \dfrac{0.056}{0.0155}\div \dfrac{0.072}{0.0155}\div \dfrac{0.0155}{0.0155}=3.6\div 4.6\div  1\\\\\dfrac{11}{3}\div \dfrac{14}{3}\div \dfrac{3}{3}=11:14:3

what is the percent by mass of a solution that contains 30 grams of potassium nitrite in 0.5 kilograms of water?
Makovka662 [10]

Answer:

5.66 %.

Explanation:

<em>mass percent is the ratio of the mass of the solute to the mass of the solution multiplied by 100.</em>

<em />

<em>mass % = (mass of solute/mass of solution) x 100.</em>

<em></em>

mass of potassium nitrite = 30.0 g,

mass of the solution = mass of water + mass of potassium nitrite = 500.0 g + 30.0 g = 530.0 g.

<em>∴ mass % = (mass of solute/mass of solution) x 100</em> = (30.0 g/530.0 g) x 100 = <em>5.66 %.</em>
