The first step in graphing a linear inequality is to graph the linear equality. The equation -x + 4y = -8 is equivalent to 4y = x - 8, which is equivalent to y = \frac{1}{4}x - 2. This is the equation for the line in slope-intercept form, so the line will have a slope of 1/4 and a y-intercept of -2 (see the first image). Notice that the line is solid, rather than dotted. This represents that points on the line are included in the solution, because the inequality sign is ≥, which is not a strict equality (< or >).

Next, we need to figure out which side to shade. To do so, simply pick any point (I like to use the point (0,0) because it makes the calculations easy) and see whether it satisfies the inequality. If it does, shade the side with that point, and if not, shade the opposite side of the graph.

Here we see that the point (0,0) does satisfy the inequality, since -(0) + 4(0) is 0, and 0 ≥ -8, so the top half of the graph should be shaded (see the second image).

Which number is irrational?
-4
2/9
8.26
11
kipiarov [429]

Answer:

None of them are irrational.

Step-by-step explanation:

An Irrational Number is a real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction.

Therefore:

-4 can be written as -4/1

2/9 is already in fraction

8.26 can be written as 826/100

11 can be written as 11/1

None of them are irrational.

However numbers like \sqrt{x}, \pi are irrational as they can not be represented as fractions.

How can you use the point-slope form of a line when only given two points?
pshichka [43]

Answer:

See below

Step-by-step explanation:

Point -slope form is:

 • y - y1 = m(x - x1)

By having one set of coordinates and knowing the value of the slope (m in the equation) you can use the form.

How to find the slope?

Here you need 2 points: Point 1 with coordinates x1, y1 and point 2 with the coordinates x2, y2

Use the formula:

 • m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

Example:

 • m = -5, and one of the points has coordinates (9, 2) then point-slope form is:
 • y - 2 = -5(x - 9)
