This is a disease of the nervous system mainly affecting the brain and spinal cord. Researchers seem to think that the immune sy

stem turns against the myelin and causes scarring. The first symptoms usually begin in young adulthood. The disease goes through remissions and exacerbation periods in which the person is symptom free and when the symptoms are present. There is no cure. Treatment includes drugs to suppress the immune system. Some people may become incapacitated.
