In "Things Fall Apart," we meet Okonkwo. He is a very strong character, but his actions are ultimately driven by fear. He is scared of being like his father, a character that Okonkwo really detests. Therefore, he acts in a way that he believes is the complete opposite of his father, making many mistakes along the way. One thing that is ironic about the fact that Okonkwo proposes to use violence to deal with the new converts to the white man's religion is that in doing so, he makes another mistake that makes him a bad leader, which in turn gets him closer to be like the father he has always hated.
