Certiorari is a contraction of the latin verb <em>"certiorare"</em> , that can be translated as certify ; As writ , from latin <em>"breve" </em>,  is an order (documented) emitted by the administrative or judiciary power .

Writ of certiorari is normally the process in which a superior court sends the document requesting of an inferior jurisdiction the records of a particular case to be reviewed.  This process depends on the superior court, jurisdiction examining if there are enough elements - reasons- to do so.

Thus, the uneven stitching in Mrs. Wright's quilt indicates that she was upset or distracted by disturbed during her quilting. As a result, with the discovery of the dead bird, the women realize that Mrs Wright had was going through an oppressive marriage and had reasons to kill her husband. That is why Mrs. Hale means something different than what she is answering: the women are actually hiding the evidence to protect Mrs. Wright.
