The equation is x + 12 = -6 and you are trying to find x. The easiest way to solve this equation is by first subtracting 12 from both sides. It would look like x + 12 - 12 = -6 - 12. Since positive 12 and negative 12 are opposite and equal, they cancel each other out. This can be drawn as well into circles and crossed out for every positive circle with a negative circle. As for -6 and -12, you can use the same method of drawing circles, (trust me they can be very helpful, especially for people like me who need to see it visually before getting a hang of it). Since both are negatives, you would have to add them together and that would give you x.
