According to educators who responded to an Education Week Research Center survey, a student's sense of belonging at school is important to academic achievement.

According to researchers, a student who believes the school environment is unfair or designed for someone of a different cultural background may become disengaged or fail to recognize his or her own potential. Factors such as a lack of diversity in school reading materials, unfair dress codes, or the perception that, for example, a mostly white, female teaching staff treats some students differently than others can exacerbate this feeling.
