HIPAA stands for health insurance portability and accountability act. This law was enacted by the Federal government and what it does is to offer privacy to a patient's health information.

A patient's medical records and information is kept private. Whenever these individuals health information, and medical records are needed to be released to another entity such as a doctor or an employer, this person must be the one to give permission for it to be released in the form of a written authorisation.
