Even though President Truman ordered the atomic bombs to be dropped, Eisenhower always opposed using them. He believed the Japanese were about to surrender anyway, and it wasn’t necessary to use horrific atomic weapons. There is much debate about this even today. No one can know if the Japanese were going to surrender before America dropped the bombs; or if without them, Japan would have continued to fight and cost thousands of American lives.
