I think it is because, She learns that they have been killed by the Aleuts, When Karana is left alone on the island, she must learn about her environment in order to survive. She learns that the Aleuts who come by ship are dangerous, not only to her but to the otters she loves. her people were nice and her father told the people in the village that is was useless to befriend the Aleuts.
