That is true and they also wanted help in making countries, to be like France and Great Britain, in their country. However, neither have happened quite yet.
The period following World War II saw the rise of many movements for independence. Many of these were concentrated in Africa. One of the main reasons why African countries wanted independence following the war was the fact that they had contributed resources to fighting it. Many colonists believed that it was unfair for them to be unable to decide their own political future when they had made such sacrifices for the colonial governments.
