The south had the advantage of knowing the battlefield, which was their homes, farms, and neighborhoods. 

They also had the best trained generals. The Union actually asked Robert E. Lee to lead their forces, but he declined. Most studied at West Point, which resides in the south. 

Another one I can think of is that they are more accustomed to weaponry and hunting than those in the north, since the north dealt mainly in industry.
